“The Changing nature of the Balance of Power and the Real Game of Thrones” Dr. Marios-Panagiotis Efthymiopoulos Harriman Institute, Columbia University CEO & Founder, Strategy International

Summary of Presentation The “Real Game of Thrones” is unfolding in countries surrounding the Black Sea, namely Ukraine and Russia. Yet, more is to be seen. The “Game of Thrones” unfolds, in areas of the “Middle Earth” but also beyond, including countries of the MENA Region. A Crisis has been developing from within Ukraine’s South and South East region, and this was just the starting point. A correlation of multilevel political, economic and religious crises are created, currently extending to as far as Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. Assuming that a domino effect will possibly extend crises further, we assume that soon more countries will have to be engaged in the fight against “evil”. “A shift in the power balance” regionally and globally is currently occurring between peripheral states, as well as leading global players. Areas and issues will be described and analyzed based on fictional tools used and seen recently on TV and read through fictional books. The presentation is multileveled, and includes a multi-dimensional research approach, both theoretically and practically, where tactics and strategies used in service of international relations and foreign affairs, are put practically to the test.
